YEAR FOUR

AUTUMN TERM 2025

Croeso i Dosbarth Abersoch!

Our topic this term is People, Places and Purpose, and through this we will be developing our humanities skills. Pupils will learn to use and interpret maps to locate places, investigate what life was like in Wales during the 1400s, and consider the significance of castles. We will also celebrate Owain Glyndŵr Day, learning about his life and rebellion. As part of our studies, pupils will research what Wales is famous for and create presentations about a chosen Welsh figure — celebrating the achievements of a diverse range of people from Wales, both past and present. Alongside this, we will broaden our perspective by comparing Wales with Spain, looking at culture, art, and weather data, and making cross-curricular links through our work in maths, expressive arts, and literacy. To bring this to life, we will make use of our established connection with a school in Málaga, giving pupils the opportunity to communicate with their peers, ask questions, and directly compare life in Wales with life in Spain.

In Literacy, we will be reading The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, a story that will allow us to explore and debate important themes such as gender discrimination, religious and cultural differences, unconscious bias, and issues of wealth and poverty. Alongside this, we will write our own Welsh myths, celebrate National Poetry Day in October by creating and performing our own poems, and research and produce a biography of a significant Welsh figure, developing key writing and presentation skills.

In Maths and Numeracy, we will develop our skills in place value, data handling, measures, fractions, decimals and money, time, and problem solving. Much of this will be explored through real-life contexts and our topic work — from travel surveys and timelines to recipes, festivals, and markets. We will also make strong links to our comparison study of Wales and Spain, using numerical data such as weather patterns, distances, and temperatures to deepen our understanding of how maths helps us interpret the world around us.

In Science, our new Bat House has sparked an exciting enquiry: Why are bats important and how are they suited to their habitats? Pupils will investigate bat habitats, adaptations, food chains, and their role in the environment. They will produce information leaflets about our Bat House to share with the local community.

Our Expressive Arts work will focus on developing our drawing skills, experimenting with pencil hardness, shading, and effects. We will also study Welsh and Celtic patterns found in castles, such as stonework and crosses, and compare these to Spanish tiles and mosaics.

In Health and Wellbeing, we will follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, focusing this term on Being Me in My World. We will explore how our attitudes and actions affect our class team, the importance of empathy, and how democracy works through the School Council. In PE, pupils will be learning gymnastics and handball.

During PPA on Thursday mornings, the class will be taught by Mr W, who will lead lessons in gymnastics and Religious Studies, focusing on Christianity. PE days will be on Tuesday and Thursday.

We are looking forward to a term full of creativity, enquiry, discovery, and meaningful connections — both in our own community and with our friends in Spain.
