RECEPTION
AUTUMN TERM 2025
Our Autumn Focus: People, Places and Purpose
This term our enquiry question is:
“Who and what is special to me?”
We will begin our learning journey by exploring the people who are special to us and the feelings they bring. Through wonderful stories such as Our Class is a Family, Who’s in My Family? and The Colour Monster, we will talk about:
-
The important people in our lives.
-
How they look after us and make us feel safe.
-
Recognising emotions in ourselves and in others.
As part of our theme, we will also discover the special places where we learn in school. Pupils will explore our allotment, Forest School and outdoor learning space, thinking about the different purposes each area has and how they help us to grow, play and learn.
Later in the term, we will turn our attention to Autumn. Using texts such as Leaf Man and Pattan’s Pumpkin, we will look closely at the changes this season brings. Pattan’s Pumpkin will inspire lots of hands-on practical maths, such as weighing and comparing, as well as some fabulous expressive arts through colour mixing and observational drawing.
Our Weekly Learning
-
Torfaen Play: Each Tuesday we enjoy fun, active play sessions.
-
PE: Pupils explore space, movement and agility in exciting weekly sessions.
-
Phonics: We follow the Little Wandle Phonics Programme with daily sessions. At the moment, we are learning 4 new sounds each week and practising blending and segmenting.
-
Maths (TAPAS): We take part in daily TAPAS maths sessions, where we sing songs, practise quick recall of facts, and use simple equipment such as a counting stick to build our number confidence.
Reception is a busy and happy place where we learn through play, stories, creativity and exploration. We look forward to sharing our learning journey with you this year.
