Discover, Explore, Change: Our Community Beneath Our Feet
This term, our exciting topic “Discover, Explore, Change: Our Community Beneath Our Feet” will take us on a journey into our local mining heritage and explore how it has shaped the communities we live in today. Through a visit to Big Pit and investigations into local mines, children will discover what life was like for miners, including the important stories of children, Black miners and animals, inspired by Ponty the Pit Pony.
Our topic will inspire learning across the curriculum. In Science, we will investigate forces, including friction, upthrust and balanced forces, while Maths will develop our understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, position, direction and statistics through mining-themed problems and challenges. In Literacy, children will develop their writing through diary entries, poetry and instructional texts, while in Welsh we will continue to build our love of the language and develop key sentence patterns.
In Art, we will explore line, tone and shading, inspired by local artist Tom Maloney, while Health and Wellbeing will include Changing Me, gymnastics and football.
Throughout our learning, we will encourage children to discover our past, explore its impact on our lives today, and consider how we can make positive changes for the future.
