Parent/carer information newsletter – January 31st 2019
After School Clubs
All clubs were cancelled today due to the weather forecast for this afternoon. Please check the Torfaen website and school Twitter account for updates for tomorrow. We will text parents/carers as early as possible in the event of closure.
The parking situation outside school at the beginning and end of the school day is a real concern. The only way to resolve the issue is by working closely together to ensure the safety of all our children. Please do not park vehicles on the pavement as this restricts access for parents with small children and pushchairs and often results in children having to step out into the road.
There have also been a number of complaints from local residents where their
driveway has been blocked.
Please remember that the safety of our pupils leaving the school premises at the end of the school day is paramount. Local police are aware of the issues regarding parking outside the school. This is an issue
for a number of schools across the borough and in some areas parents have received fines for parking illegally or irresponsibly. When parking your vehicle please think of the SAFETY of your child and every other child.
Armed Forces Covenant
You should have received a letter asking if any pupils have a parent currently serving in the armed forces or a parent who is a veteran having left the forces within the past six years. As a school we are able to access additional funding for such pupils and I ask that you complete the slip at the bottom of the letter and return in to school as soon as possible. Please be assured that no names will be shared, it is only number of pupils that is collected by the local authority.
Parent Teacher Consultations (PTCs)
PTCs will take place week on Monday, 18th and Tuesday, 19th February. Teachers will send individual appointment times home. It is important that you attend PTCs as teachers will share the levels that your child is working at and how well they are doing in relation to individual targets.
There will be no clubs during this week to accommodate PTCs.
Opening Celebration Event – Extension of Cwmffrwdoer Primary School
Next Thursday, 7th February, Kirsty Williams, the AM Minister for Education in Wales will officially open the new build teaching block extension during the school day.
Our choir will perform at the opening and some of our pupil groups will meet the Minister.
Torfaen Community Learning are holding parent/carer sessions this term in ‘Developing Reading Skills’ for reception class (Dosbarth Poppit Sands). These sessions will take place every Wednesday at 9:30am.
Mindfulness Outdoors and Outdoor Learning
We have recently began working with Outdoor Coaching UK to deliver workshops for pupils and staff using the outdoors as a focus for understanding and appreciating how mindfulness can improve and inspire wellbeing in the learning environment. Year 3 pupils from Dosbarth Tresaith and Dosbarth Barafundle will experience weekly workshops developing ‘Mindfulness Outdoors’ while all other KS2 classes will experience outdoor learning activities including team work problem solving, archery, use of the climbing wall at Garnteg Primary School, bushcraft skills (fire, shelter, cooking).
Foundation Phase classes will experience Tipi life stories and craft and games.
