National Reading and National Numeracy Tests 2016

Earlier this term, I wrote to you with the dates of the National Reading and Numeracy Tests.

The Welsh Government introduced National Reading and Numeracy tests for all pupils from Year 2 – Year 9. This means that all classes from Year 2 (Dosbarth Melyn) to Y6 (Dosbarth Glas) will take these tests.

The tests will take place in Cwmffrwdoer Primary school next week on the days indicated in the table at the bottom of the page.

Tests last between 30 minutes and one hour, and are devised so that younger children will be able to sit these tests in ‘chunks’. Tests will be delivered in classes or year groups. To ensure that schools are undertaken fairly a sample of schools across the region will be monitored by external officers.

There is one Reading Test and two Numeracy tests: a Procedural test for knowledge and understanding, and a Reasoning Test for application of skills and problem solving.

The tests will be marked in school and raw scores will be converted to standardised scores and age-equivalent scores. The standardised score will show how your child’s performance in the test compares to other children of the same age who have taken the test in Wales. The age-equivalent score will tell you whether your child’s reading age, or equivalent to, above or below their actual age, based on how your child performed in the tests. Test results and comparative data will be sent out at the end of the year. More information can be found on the Learning Wales website.
